Vinyasa Yoga and Why it’s Great for New or Experienced Yoga Practitioners

Just like every story has a beginning, middle and end, or how instruments blend harmoniously in an orchestra- a well structured Vinyasa yoga class brings together the body and mind by intentionally linking postures or asana with the breath. Here the breath is the story teller and conductor. It can shape the body and mind.

You may have heard the term "vinyasa" if you've attended yoga classes. Very often it is called "flow yoga". But it's much much more than that. Here’s why Vinyasa yoga is great way to start or grow your yoga practice:

It can be used to achieve specific goals

Vinyasa yoga is intentionally sequenced with room to modify the practice. "Vi" in Sanskrit means "special" and "nyasa" means "to place". In a Vinyasa class, the use of asanas and the way they are sequenced is intentional, with a specific goal or objective. For example, strengthening a specific part of the body, improving balance, or even working towards a particular type or group of asanas.

Movement is aligned with the breath

In a Vinyasa class, every movement is supported by the breath - an inhale, exhale and sometimes while holding the breath after inhale or exhale. The breath doesn't just support the movement, it can also influence the state of body and mind. Depending on how breathing and asanas are used together, a vinyasa class can be energising, relaxing or a blend of both.

Perfecting postures isn't the goal

In a Vinyasa class, the ability to move into or hold a posture comfortably and with stability is more important than how the posture looks, physically. Are you able to breath slowly and comfortably? Are you aware of how you are holding yourself and sensations in the body? A vinyasa class can be easily modified to suit every type of body and yoga experience.

It combines dynamic movement with static holds

n a vinyasa yoga class, you may move in and out of postures, while breathing consciously. The dynamic movement is a great way to improve flexibility and mobility. Multiple postures may also be linked together, and the breath is used to flow from one asana to the next. At the same time, you can build strength while holding the postures.

The beginning and end are equally important

A Vinyasa class has a well-defined beginning, middle, and end. Because the middle can be the most intense, the start is structured to prepare the body, breath and mind adequately. Similarly, the end of class, tapers down slowly, to allow the body, breath and mind to settle. Sometimes, pranayama or breathwork is used to start and end the class.
