What is prana? 6 Ways to Retain this Vital Energy Within Us

What does it mean to be healthy - in body and mind? Science measures health parameters like blood pressure, pulse rate, weight etc. But there is something subtler, which cannot be easily measured, which determines our physical, mental and emotional well-being. Prana is the vital energy and life-force, it flows within us through subtle energy channels called Nadis. It is the source of how we live, move and function, and it pervades every part of our being.

Good health - both physical and mental - is determined by the amount of free-flowing prana within us When we are healthy, content and peaceful - prana flows freely inside us. When we are unwell, restless or feel stuck - the prana disperses outside of us. The goal of yoga practice is to create a conducive inner environment for to prana to flow freely. How do we do this?

  1. The breath carries the prana - practice slow, controlled breathing everyday

Air is one of the main sources of prana - and the quality of the breath determines the quality of prana. Set aside 10 minutes everyday to practice deep breathing. Inhale through the nose, pause, exhale through the nose, pause. Gradually add pranayama techniques like alternate nostril or nadi shodhana.

2. Use sound - as a way to connect with the subtle pranic vibration

It is said that the entire universe is the manifestation of sound. Single syllable sounds like OM or MA or simply humming can help us connect with our inner resonance and the prana as it courses through the energy channels or nadis.

3. Eat fresh, nourishing food

Food is another source of prana, consume it mindfully, choosing healthy, fresh and nutritious food. Eat when you are hungry, allowing the body to digest what you have already eaten properly. Notice how you feel after eating- do you feel light and energetic or full and lethargic?

4. Include gentle, mindful movement everyday

Mindful movement can support the circulation of prana within us. Observe how you feel after exercising. Do you feel lighter, can you breathe fuller? Exercising to the point of exhaustion can lead to dispersion of prana outside.

5. Nurture healthy relationships

Our relationships affect our state of mind. And the mind and prana are closely linked. Cultivate healthy relationships through compassion, empathy and equanimity. Protect your peace of mind by thinking about how you perceive troubled relationships or challenging situations.

6. Get good quality sleep

The quality of sleep impacts the quality of mind the following day. Keep a simple night time routine to unwind and try to sleep at the same time every day. Practice conscious breathing, specifically a slow, controlled exhalation, if you find it difficult to fall asleep.
